From the

Superintendent

Dr. Steve Smith

Benton’s spirit has been a beacon of hope, reminding us of the importance of unity, understanding, and collective healing.

Friends and Neighbors — It is with a heavy heart and deep respect for our community’s strength that I write to you today. As we come together to embrace a new initiative—the inaugural issue of Connections47—I’m reminded of the ties that bind us, especially in the face of adversity.

Six weeks ago, our tight-knit community experienced a loss that words can hardly encompass. The untimely passing of three young souls has left an indelible mark on our hearts. Their memories are imprinted in our thoughts, and their legacies will be felt in our district and homes for generations to come. While Connections47 aims to highlight our shared educational journey and celebrate our students’ accomplishments, it is impossible to ignore the void that these three young people have left behind.

Yet, as we mourn, I’ve also witnessed unparalleled solidarity and compassion. Benton’s spirit has been a beacon of hope, reminding us of the importance of unity, understanding, and collective healing. It is said that true character is revealed not in the good times, but in the challenging ones. And in this time of heartbreak, our community’s resilience and unwavering support for one another have been profoundly evident.

With this inaugural issue, our intent is to share the various facets of our community—our achievements, aspirations, even as we acknowledge our shared sorrows. As we turn each page, let us remember the vibrant lives of Joecy, Landen, and Bradley, while also looking forward with hope and dedication towards the future of all our children.

I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve as your superintendent, especially during such pivotal moments. Together, as one community, we’ll continue to navigate the highs and the lows, always supporting one another and striving to offer the best for our students.

Wishing you moments of peace and continued strength,

Dr. Steve Smith, Superintendent

Benton Grade School
