Audra Harrison
A Young Artist Shines
“I like using my imagination and drawing what’s in my mind.”
The second-grader captivates with her artwork that has been featured in prestigious exhibits.
At just eight years old, Audra Harrison, a second grader at Benton Grade School, is already making a name for herself in the art world. Her creative talents, along with those of several of her school mates, were recently showcased in a special exhibit in St. Louis, Missouri, an achievement that highlights her imaginative spirit and the supportive strength of the Grade School’s exceptional Art Department.
Audra’s passion for art is evident in her vibrant works, which reflect her active imagination and love for creativity. “I like using my imagination and drawing what’s in my mind,” she shared enthusiastically. Her favorite medium is painting, where she brings her ideas to life with colorful strokes and bold designs.
The journey to having her artwork displayed in St. Louis began with a school competition. Audra’s piece stood out among many entries, earning her a spot in the exhibit. The excitement and pride she felt upon hearing the news were palpable. “I was really happy,” Audra said, her eyes lighting up at the memory.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Audra is an energetic and playful child. She loves spending time outdoors, playing hide and seek with her siblings, Ellie and Joe, and enjoying games with her miniature Goldendoodle, Hawk. “Playing outside with my dog and my brother and sister is so much fun,” she said. Audra’s active lifestyle also includes sports like softball and basketball, where she enjoys the thrill of getting a hit and shooting hoops.
Audra’s artistic accomplishments have been supported by her loving family. Her mother, a fifth-grade teacher at Benton Grade School, and her father, who—according to Audra— is known for making delicious homemade donuts, have nurtured her creative and academic growth. “My mom and dad are really special to me. They love me and always make me feel good,” Audra said, expressing her deep affection for her parents.
Beyond her family, Audra finds inspiration in her teachers and friends. Her second-grade teacher, Miss Clark, has played a significant role in fostering her love for learning, especially in math, a subject in which Audra excels. “I like learning new things and seeing my friends at school,” Audra said. Her favorite books include unicorn and fairy tales, as well as the popular “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series.
Audra’s artwork has been exhibited at several prestigious locations in St. Louis, including the St. Louis Art Museum, the Butterfly House in Chesterfield, and the Missouri Botanical Garden. Sharing exhibit space with renowned artists like Picasso, Audra’s talent has been recognized and celebrated far beyond her hometown. When asked about her future aspirations, Audra revealed a tender-hearted goal: “I want to be a veterinarian so I can take care of puppies and bunnies because they’re cute.” Her compassion for animals and desire to help them is a testament to her kind and empathetic nature.
The community has rallied around Audra, celebrating her achievements and providing a nurturing environment for her to thrive.
Audra’s story is a shining example of the talent and potential nurtured at Benton Grade School. Her imaginative artwork and spirited personality have not only brought pride to her family but also inspired her peers and teachers. As she continues to explore her creative talents and pursue her dreams, Audra Harrison embodies the vibrant and supportive spirit of Benton.
Looking ahead from our interview date in mid-May, Audra is excited about her upcoming trip to Disney World. This trip, filled with adventure and joy, is a fitting celebration for a young artist whose journey is just beginning.
In a heartfelt moment, Audra reflected on her favorite things about school and life. “I love seeing my friends, learning new things, and playing with my dog,” she said. Her advice to her younger self and others is clever and, frankly, unprecedented by this writer: “Tell her new things so she can know everything and skip to the third grade.”
With her boundless imagination, supportive family, and a community that champions her success, Audra Harrison is set to achieve great things. Her story is a testament to the power of creativity, determination, and the unwavering support of a loving community.
