Ginger Reno

From ‘Gatekeeper’ to District Office

“I love our little community. A lot of the people I grew up with are back, raising their families.”

From managing the chaos of daily school life to stepping into a new role, Ginger Reno’s dedication to the Benton community remains unwavering.

We’re talking across a very busy counter in mid-May. Phones are ringing, doors are swinging open, and Ginger Reno, the dynamic and ever-resourceful secretary for grades five through eight at Benton Grade School, is about to embark on a new chapter in her career. As she transitions to the District Office beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, her story is one of dedication, adaptability, and an unyielding commitment to her community.

Ginger’s journey at Benton Grade School began twelve years ago, a period marked by significant changes and challenges. Reflecting on her time, Ginger recalls, “We used to have no doors locked. People could just freely come in and out. It’s a different world now.” The tightening of security measures is just one of the many transformations she has witnessed. Yet, through it all, Ginger’s primary focus has remained steadfast: the students.

A Benton native and alumna of the very school she serves, Ginger’s roots run deep in the community. After graduating from Southern Illinois University (SIU) and spending years in sales and marketing roles across varied geography, she found her way back home. “I grew up here, went to school right here,” she shares with a smile. The familiarity and sense of belonging that Benton offers drew her back, and it was a decision she cherishes.

Ginger’s role as the 5-8 secretary, or as she fondly puts it, “the gatekeeper,” is anything but monotonous. Every day presents a new set of challenges and opportunities to make a difference. “There is not a day that has ever been the same in twelve years,” she laughs. Her office is the first point of contact for students, parents, and teachers alike, making her the linchpin of the school’s daily operations.

One poignant moment that highlights the emotional depth of her role occurred during our interview. Ginger received a call informing her that two students had just lost their grandmother. With tears welling up, she remarked, “It’s the gamut. You are the first responder.” This ability to empathize and provide comfort in times of need is a testament to her strength and compassion.

Her colleagues and the students’ parents alike recognize Ginger’s exceptional ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining her composure and focus. “Multitasking is the most important part of this job,” she asserts. Whether it’s managing an upset student, a concerned parent, or a teacher needing assistance, Ginger’s priority is always clear: the well-being of the students.

Ginger’s journey is also a personal one. Her two daughters, both graduates of Benton schools, are carving their paths in the world. The eldest recently completed her studies at SIU and is on her way to becoming a physical therapy assistant, while the younger is set to pursue a career in education. “I told her, follow your heart. We need teachers. It’s a great job,” Ginger proudly shares.

As she prepares to move to the District Office, Ginger reflects on what makes Benton so special. “I love our little community. A lot of the people I grew up with are back, raising their families. There’s something comforting about knowing everyone,” she says. This sense of community, the shared history, and the collective pride are what make Benton not just a place to live, but a true home.

Looking ahead, Ginger is excited about the new challenges her role at the District Office will bring. However, her heart will always belong to the bustling halls of Benton Grade School. “I’ve seen these kids grow up from fifth grade to graduating high school. It’s been so much fun,” she reminisces.

In advising her younger self, Ginger’s wisdom seems to hit a relatable mark: “Continue to work hard, follow your heart, and try not to please everyone else. Happiness is a choice.” This philosophy has not only guided her professional journey but has also shaped her personal life, making her a beloved figure in the Benton community.

Ginger Reno’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and an unwavering love for her community. As she steps into her new role, the legacy she leaves behind at Benton Grade School is one of inspiration and profound impact. The heart and soul she has poured into her work will continue to resonate through the halls of the school, touching the lives of students, parents, and colleagues for years to come.
