Waylon Carias

Waylon Carias’s Creative Adventure

“I really like painting and drawing.”

A reserved and thoughtful third grader shares his love for art, friendship, family, and a community that cares.

From his hometown here in Benton, a young artist is making waves in the art world. Waylon Carias, a thirdgrader at Benton Grade School, has already achieved what many artists only dream of: having his artwork showcased in prominent venues in the big city. His work, along with several of his kindergarten through fourth-grade peers, has appeared in the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Despite his young age and reserved nature, Waylon’s thoughtful perspective and unique artistic style have captured the hearts of many.

Waylon’s interest in art began at an early age. “I really like painting and drawing,” he shares, his eyes lighting up as he describes his favorite creations. “I love drawing these little things with a circle body and zigzag mouths.” This trademark character+, with its distinctive zigzag mouth, has become a symbol of Waylon’s creativity and originality.

His journey into the art world took a significant leap when his artwork was chosen for an exhibit that traveled to St. Louis. “I think just one piece got accepted,” he modestly admits. But even a single piece is a tremendous achievement, especially for a young artist like Waylon. Being part of such a prestigious exhibit made him feel “special, really special.”

Waylon’s success is not just a personal triumph but a reflection of the strong support he receives from his family and school. Born in Mount Vernon and raised in Benton, Waylon’s family has always been his cornerstone. He speaks fondly of his parents and grandparents, particularly his father, whose bravery and resilience inspire him daily. “My dad works in a coal mine and has traveled to many states,” Waylon explains. Despite suffering a severe injury on the job, his father’s determination and strength have left a lasting impression on Waylon.

His mother, who has spent time serving in the U.S. Army, also holds a special place in his heart. Although she did not serve in combat, her role in supporting those who did underscores the bravery and dedication that run in the family. Waylon’s late grandfather, whom he remembers as playful and kind, is another source of inspiration, his memory evoking both tears and smiles.

At Benton Grade School, Waylon is surrounded by people who encourage his interests and promote his artistic pursuits. He speaks highly of his thirdgrade teacher, Mr. McGee, describing him as “the nicest” and “fair.” Mr. McGee’s fairness and supportive nature have created a safe space for Waylon to express himself and thrive.

Waylon’s cousins, Layla and Philip, who also attend Benton Grade School, play a significant role in his life. He cherishes the time spent with them, whether it’s hanging out at family cookouts or simply talking on the swings during recess. His best friends, Braxton and Cooper, are his companions in both fun and support, making school life enjoyable and enriching.

Waylon’s journey is just beginning, and his future is bright with possibilities. As he prepares to celebrate his ninth birthday, he looks forward to a party at the Main Event in St. Louis, a place he tells us is filled with fun activities like jungle gyms, VR laser tag, and bowling. “You get a card that allows you to play as many games as you want for three entire hours,” he excitedly shares, looking forward to the celebration.

Waylon’s story is a testament to the power of creativity, family support, and a nurturing community. His achievements at such a young age serve as an inspiration not only to his peers but also to the entire region. As he continues to grow and develop his artistic talents, there is no doubt that Waylon Carias will keep shining brightly, reminding everyone that even small towns can produce great talents. Of course, we already knew that, but these reminders are welcome, nevertheless!

Waylon’s journey reflects the spirit of Benton Grade School and the community it serves. His story is one of hope, resilience, and the belief that with support and encouragement, young talents can achieve extraordinary things. As Waylon continues to draw his signature figurines with the squiggly lines, and explore new artistic horizons, his journey will undoubtedly inspire others to follow their passions and dreams, wherever they may lead.
