Zayden Atwood
Sure, He Loves Sharks, But He’s More Than Meets the Eye
“In his thoughtful, reserved manner, Zayden represents the best of Benton Grade School.”
First-grader Zayden Atwood shares his inspiring story of creativity, kindness, and family values through his introspective lens.
On meeting him for the first time last May, clad in his Spiderman P.J.’s, first-grader Zayden Atwood stands out as a quiet, thoughtful young man whose work has already reached the grand halls of some of St. Louis’ most iconic venues. His journey, filled with imagination, kindness, and a supportive family, is a testament to the nurturing environment at Benton Grade School and the broader Benton community.
When asked about his favorite subject, Zayden’s face lights up. “Art,” he says with a shy smile. Zayden’s passion for art, particularly drawing sharks, has led to his work being featured in a moving exhibit that traveled to the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. For a first-grader, this is no small feat. It’s a monumental achievement that places his art in the same spaces where works by masters are displayed.
“How did you become interested in drawing sharks?” I asked. Zayden’s eyes gleamed with excitement as he recounted his inspiration. “I watched a TV show,” he said simply. This initial spark of interest has ignited a deep love for art, particularly the ferocious yet fascinating world of sharks. His artwork, detailed and vivid, captures the imagination and curiosity of anyone who views it.
Zayden’s journey is not just about his artistic talents. It’s also about the strong support system that surrounds him. With two younger sisters, ages four and five, Zayden is the big brother who sets an example, we can easily imagine, of kindness and responsibility. “They always play with me and give me hugs when I come home from school,” he shares. It’s clear that family means everything to Zayden, and his actions reflect this deep bond.
His mother, who he’s proud of because of her hard work, is a significant influence in his life. “She works a lot,” Zayden says with a mixture of admiration and gratitude. He understands the value of hard work and appreciates the sacrifices his mother makes for their family. This understanding is not lost on a seven-yearold who knows that the Spiderman pajamas he proudly wears on pajama day at school are a result of his mother’s dedication.
When it comes to friends, Zayden cherishes his friendship with Jalen, a classmate who always plays with him. “She’s kind,” he says. For Zayden, kindness is a recurring theme. Whether it’s his interactions with his sisters, his mother, or his friends, Zayden embodies the very essence of being considerate and thoughtful. It is heartening to see how important this is to the young Spiderman before me.
At school, Zayden’s favorite activities revolve around art, drawing, and painting. Under the guidance of his art teacher, Miss Fitzpatrick, Zayden has flourished. Miss Fitzpatrick, known for her big smile and infectious enthusiasm, has created a nurturing environment where young artists like Zayden can thrive. “She’s one of the best art teachers in the whole state of Illinois,” Zayden says with pride. And, having met Miss Fitzpatrick ourselves, we have no doubt.
Riding the school bus is another part of Zayden’s daily routine. He notices and enjoys the colorful variety of buses, from the pink bus he rides to school to the dark green bus that takes him to his grandmother’s house on Tuesdays and Fridays. His grandmother, affectionately called “Momo,” is another pillar of support in his life. “I love her. She makes the best spaghetti,” Zayden beams. Momo’s home is a place of comfort and love, where Zayden feels cherished and safe.
As Zayden reflects on his experiences in first grade, he finds it hard to pinpoint a single best memory. “I don’t know,” he says thoughtfully. But his eyes light up when he talks about recess with Jalen, playing games like Duck, Duck, Goose. These moments, filled with laughter and joy, are what make his school days special.
Looking ahead, Zayden is both excited and a little nervous about moving up to second grade. He hopes to continue his friendship with Jalen and explore new subjects, particularly science, which he loves. His fascination with planets and stars shows a budding interest in the mysteries of the universe.
Zayden’s story is one of quiet determination, creativity, and the power of a supportive family. His journey from drawing sharks inspired by a TV show to having his artwork displayed in prestigious venues is a testament to the opportunities provided by Benton Grade School and the encouragement of his family and teachers.
As we prepare to take his picture, Zayden leads the way back to his classroom, his small frame radiating confidence and hope across the lengthy walk, during which we can barely keep up with Peter Parker’s alter-ego. In his thoughtful, reserved manner, Zayden Atwood represents the best of Benton Grade School – a place where young minds are nurtured, dreams are encouraged, and every child has the chance to shine.
Zayden’s inspiring journey, marked by creativity, kindness, and family support, leaves us with a sense of pride in our school and community. His story reminds us that with the right encouragement, even the youngest among us can achieve greatness.
